Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K. C. Venugopal has confirmed that Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay has approached the Congress party seeking its support to form a government in Tamil Nadu. The development comes amid intense political negotiations following the recent state assembly elections.
Congress Views Mandate as Pro-Secular
Speaking to the media, Venugopal stated that the Congress party views the electoral mandate as one for a secular government committed to upholding the Constitution. He emphasized that the party is determined to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies from influencing the state government. Venugopal added that the Congress has asked the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) to take a final decision on Vijay's request, keeping in mind the people's mandate.
Political Context
Vijay, a popular actor-turned-politician, led his party TVK to a significant performance in the elections, emerging as a key player in the state's political landscape. The Congress, which contested the elections in alliance with other secular parties, now finds itself in a position to influence government formation. Venugopal's remarks indicate that the party is weighing its options carefully, balancing the need for a stable government with its ideological commitments.
The Congress leadership has made it clear that any decision on supporting Vijay will be taken after due consultation with state leaders and in accordance with the broader objective of keeping the BJP out of power in Tamil Nadu. The TNCC is expected to deliberate on the matter and convey its decision to the central leadership soon.
