Congress Leader M Lakshmana Accuses BJP of Delimitation Injustice to Southern States
Congress leader M Lakshmana has strongly criticized the proposed delimitation exercise, labeling it a grave injustice to the southern states of India. He alleges that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is conspiring to stay in power by manipulating seat allocations in a way that disproportionately benefits northern regions, particularly Uttar Pradesh.
Disparity in Seat Projections
Lakshmana provided specific figures to highlight the imbalance. According to his analysis, even if the total number of parliamentary seats increases by 50% after delimitation, all six southern states combined—including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Puducherry—would receive only 136 seats. In stark contrast, Uttar Pradesh alone is projected to gain 142 seats. This disparity, he argues, undermines the principle of fair representation and reflects a deliberate political strategy by the BJP.
Political Implications and Allegations
The Congress leader emphasized that this move is not merely administrative but a calculated effort to consolidate power. He stated that the BJP's approach to delimitation is designed to marginalize southern voices in national politics, potentially altering the democratic landscape. Lakshmana called for greater scrutiny and public debate on the issue, urging citizens to recognize the long-term consequences for federalism and regional equity.
This controversy comes amid ongoing discussions about electoral reforms and the need for balanced representation across India's diverse states. The allegations have sparked reactions from various political quarters, with supporters of the delimitation process arguing it is based on population data to ensure proportional representation.
