Congress Takes Swipe at Election Commission Over Poll Schedule Announcement

As the Election Commission prepared to announce the schedule for the upcoming assembly elections, the Congress party launched a sharp critique on Sunday. Congress general secretary in-charge communications, Jairam Ramesh, took to social media platform X to express skepticism about the timing of the announcement.

Allegations of Political Influence

In his post, Ramesh stated, "The Election Commission will announce the schedule for the 2026 assembly elections at 4 PM today. It would have been given the go-ahead by the G2, since G1 would have completed this round of inaugurations, ribbon-cuttings, flag-offs, and launches." This remark is part of a broader pattern where the Congress uses the term 'G2' to refer to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, both hailing from Gujarat, implying their undue influence over governmental and electoral processes.

Criticism of Model Code of Conduct

Ramesh further elaborated on his concerns regarding the Election Commission's Model Code of Conduct (MCC). He asserted, "The Election Commission's Model Code of Conduct (MCC) will soon come into effect. But since 2014 this has come to stand for Modi's Code of Campaigning which will be full of defamation, abuses, intimidation, fear-mongering, and spreading the virus of lies." This statement highlights the party's perception that the MCC has been compromised under the current administration, transforming into a tool for partisan campaigning rather than ensuring fair electoral practices.

Details of the Upcoming Elections

The Election Commission announced that it would reveal the dates for assembly polls in five regions: Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, and the Union territory of Puducherry. The terms of these legislative assemblies are set to conclude on various dates in May and June, necessitating timely elections to ensure democratic continuity.

In preparation for these polls, the final electoral rolls for the four states and Puducherry have been published as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voters' list. This step is crucial for maintaining the integrity and accuracy of the electoral process, allowing eligible citizens to participate in the democratic exercise.

Political Context and Implications

The Congress's comments reflect ongoing tensions in Indian politics, where opposition parties frequently accuse the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of manipulating institutions for electoral gain. By invoking 'G1' and 'G2', the Congress aims to underscore what it sees as a centralized control over key decisions, including those related to election schedules and campaign regulations.

This incident underscores the heightened political atmosphere as India approaches another round of state elections, with parties leveraging social media and public statements to shape narratives and challenge institutional neutrality. The Election Commission's role in upholding impartiality remains under scrutiny amid such allegations.
