Congress MP Manickam Tagore Condemns Mamata Banerjee's 'Irresponsible' Collusion Allegations
Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Tuesday launched a sharp criticism against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, labeling her recent remarks as "irresponsible allegations" after she hinted at a possible collusion between the BJP, Congress, and the DMK. In a strongly worded post on social media platform X, Tagore emphasized that while the Congress and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) are allies within the INDIA bloc at the national level, they are direct competitors in the political arena of West Bengal.
Tagore's Strong Rebuttal to Mamata's Claims
Tagore wrote, "Mamata Banerjee's recent remarks are highly irresponsible and condemnable. At a time when unity is paramount to challenge the BJP, baseless accusations only serve to undermine the solidarity of opposition parties. Making such claims without evidence suggests a loss of composure on her part." He further pointed out historical alliances, noting, "It must not be forgotten that it was the Trinamool Congress—not the Congress party—that allied with the BJP in 1998 and 1999, and contested the 2004 elections in partnership with the RSS-BJP alliance."
He added, "Targeting alliance partners and casting aspersions without factual basis is not leadership; it is a distraction. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has consistently stood firm against the ideology of the RSS and the BJP, facing over 25 cases, disqualification from Parliament, and eviction from his official residence as a price for his stance."
Call for Unity and Responsibility Ahead of Elections
Tagore called for greater unity and responsibility from the TMC as a Congress ally at the Centre, stating, "The Congress party requires no lessons on how to fight the BJP. This is not the time for irresponsible allegations but for unity, responsibility, and clarity of purpose." His remarks came in response to Mamata Banerjee's insinuations of collusion between the BJP and INDIA bloc allies, including Congress and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin.
Adding to the tension, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee accused, "Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury's Congress is openly splitting votes with full protection from Amit Shah's central forces." These statements have highlighted a potential rift within the INDIA bloc, with leaders like Sagrika Ghosh and Udhayanidhi Stalin promoting Mamata Banerjee and MK Stalin, respectively, as key figures in the alliance.
West Bengal Assembly Elections Context
The political drama unfolds as West Bengal prepares for high-stakes Assembly elections. Polling for the 294-member Assembly is scheduled in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with counting set for May 4. The elections are anticipated to be a fierce contest primarily between the TMC and the BJP, while the Congress and the Left parties also aim to expand their influence in the state.
This episode underscores the fragile nature of opposition unity in India, with internal conflicts threatening to overshadow the collective goal of challenging the ruling BJP. As the election dates approach, all eyes are on how these dynamics will shape the political landscape in West Bengal and beyond.
