Congress MPs Launch Scathing Attack on Modi and Saini Governments Over Haryana Farmer Debt
In a sharp escalation of political rhetoric, Congress Members of Parliament on Sunday launched a fierce assault on the Narendra Modi-led Central government and the Nayab Saini-led state administration in Haryana. The focus of their criticism was the alarming increase in debt burden plaguing the agricultural community in the state.
Official Figures Reveal Staggering Debt Levels
Lok Sabha MP from Sirsa and former Union minister Kumari Selja presented damning official statistics to substantiate her claims. She revealed that according to data provided in Parliament by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and a written reply submitted in the Haryana assembly by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, the situation has reached critical proportions.
As of September 30, 2025, a staggering Rs 60,816 crore was outstanding against 25,67,467 farmers across Haryana. This translates to an average debt of over Rs 1.83 lakh per farming family in the state, painting a grim picture of agricultural distress under the current political leadership.
Double-Engine Governance Failing Farmers, Claims Surjewala
Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Surjewala joined the criticism, asserting that the BJP's much-touted "double-engine" governance model has spectacularly failed Haryana's agricultural sector. He outlined multiple systemic failures that have contributed to the deepening crisis.
- Consistently rising input costs for agricultural operations
- Inadequate implementation of Minimum Support Price (MSP) benefits
- Delayed and insufficient compensation during natural disasters
- Continued vulnerability of landless farmers without safety nets
"These circumstances have transformed what should be a profitable occupation into a source of immense distress and financial burden," Surjewala emphasized during his remarks.
Broader Social Consequences of Agricultural Distress
The Congress leaders connected the farming crisis to wider social problems affecting Haryana. Surjewala particularly highlighted how current government policies are creating a domino effect of negative consequences.
While pushing farmers deeper into debt traps, these policies simultaneously drive young people toward unemployment, substance abuse, and forced migration from rural areas. This dual crisis threatens to undermine the social fabric of a state where agriculture remains a cornerstone of the economy and identity.
Congress Demands Comprehensive Policy Interventions
Both Selja and Surjewala presented a four-point demand to address what they characterize as a man-made disaster affecting Haryana's agricultural community:
- Formulation of a concrete farm debt relief plan with clear implementation timelines
- Effective MSP implementation for all crops without exception
- Time-bound compensation mechanisms for natural disaster losses
- Special assistance packages for small and landless farmers
Selja concluded by reaffirming the Congress party's commitment to championing the rights and interests of both farmers and youth across Haryana. She vowed that the opposition would maintain pressure on the ruling dispensations until substantive policy corrections are implemented to alleviate the suffering of the agricultural community.
