The Congress party on Saturday paid rich tributes to India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his 60th death anniversary. Party leaders, including former President Sonia Gandhi and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, gathered at the Shanti Van memorial in Delhi to offer floral tributes.
Remembering Nehru's Legacy
Speaking on the occasion, Kharge highlighted Nehru's immense contributions to the nation's freedom struggle and his role in shaping modern India. He described Nehru as a visionary leader who laid the foundation for a secular, democratic, and progressive India.
Party Leaders Pay Homage
Several other senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, also paid their respects. They remembered Nehru's commitment to social justice, scientific temper, and international peace.
The tributes come at a time when the Congress party is gearing up for the upcoming assembly elections in several states. Leaders used the occasion to reiterate the party's commitment to Nehru's ideals of inclusivity and development.
Public Participation
Apart from party leaders, a large number of Congress workers and supporters also visited Shanti Van to pay homage. Many carried placards with Nehru's quotes and sang patriotic songs in his memory.
Nehru, who served as Prime Minister from 1947 until his death in 1964, is remembered for his role in the Non-Aligned Movement and his emphasis on education and industrialization. His birthday, November 14, is celebrated as Children's Day in India.
