Punjab Congress Calls for MHA-Led Probe Into Gurdaspur Police Killings
The Punjab Congress has urgently demanded a comprehensive and independent investigation by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to uncover the truth behind the fatal shooting of two police personnel in Gurdaspur district on Saturday night. This call comes amid growing concerns over border security and potential lapses in the initial police response.
Warring Raises Alarm Over Ominous Developments
Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring described the incident as "an ominous development and must be taken seriously." He drew a chilling parallel to events preceding the 2016 Pathankot terror attack, recalling that a superintendent of police was abducted and his vehicle snatched, which was followed by an immediate assault on the Pathankot airbase. Warring emphasized, "The police must not rush to conclusions based on mere speculation without due enquiries and investigation. The fact the incident took place close to the border demands a thorough and comprehensive probe to get to the bottom of the incident."
Highlighting broader security threats, Warring pointed out that drugs are frequently pushed into this region from across the border via drones. He warned, "If the drones can carry drugs, they can also carry weapons. There is genuine and justified concern among the people after these killings."
Randhawa Challenges Police Shootout Theory
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader and MP from Gurdaspur, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, has strongly refuted the police's mutual shootout theory. He cited recently released CCTV footage that appears to contradict official accounts, stating, "According to the visual evidence, both officers were either sitting or asleep at the time of the incident." Randhawa raised a critical point of contention: "Most concerning is the claim that a rifle was found placed behind the bed, making it physically impossible for it to have been used in the firing as alleged. This is not merely a discrepancy; it is a fundamental contradiction."
Expressing serious concern, Randhawa joined the demand for an independent MHA investigation. He stressed that accountability must be fixed at all levels and that the matter should not be handled lightly or influenced by political motives. "The families of the deceased officers deserve justice and the people of Punjab expect transparency," he asserted. "Any attempt to suppress facts or shield those responsible would severely damage public trust in the administration."
