The Congress party has launched a sharp attack on the Centre after commercial LPG cylinder prices were increased across major cities from June 1. Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of fuelling inflation, Congress claimed commercial LPG prices have surged by nearly ₹1,572 over the past five months. The latest hike has intensified the political debate over rising fuel costs, even as the government maintains that India has adequate fuel reserves and no supply shortage.
Congress leaders took to social media and press conferences to criticize the price hike, calling it another burden on the common man. They highlighted that the increase in commercial LPG prices comes at a time when households and small businesses are already struggling with high costs of essential commodities. The party's attack on the Prime Minister used the term 'Inflation Man', accusing him of prioritizing corporate interests over public welfare.
Political Reactions Intensify
The price revision, effective from June 1, saw commercial LPG cylinder rates rise by approximately ₹100 in metros like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai. This marks the sixth increase in five months, cumulatively adding over ₹1,500 to the price of a 19-kg commercial cylinder. Opposition parties have united in condemning the move, demanding a rollback and accusing the government of mismanaging the economy.
Government's Defense
The central government, however, defended the price adjustment, attributing it to global crude oil price fluctuations and supply chain disruptions. Officials stated that India's fuel reserves are adequate and there is no shortage in the market. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas emphasized that LPG prices are market-linked and revised periodically based on international benchmarks.
Meanwhile, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) countered the Congress allegations, pointing to the opposition's past track record on inflation. BJP spokespersons accused Congress of playing politics while the government works to stabilize prices through strategic reserves and diplomatic efforts. The political slugfest is expected to continue as both sides gear up for upcoming state elections.
Consumers and small business owners, particularly those in the hospitality and food sectors, have expressed concern over the repeated price hikes. Many fear that the increased costs will be passed on to customers, further driving up inflation. The Congress party has promised to raise the issue in Parliament and has called for a nationwide protest against the price hike.
