Congress Accuses Government of Undermining Election Commission's Independence
The Congress party on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the central government over the continuation of Gyanesh Kumar as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), describing it as an assault on the Constitution and a threat to the democratic fabric of the nation.
In a strongly worded statement, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that the decision to keep Kumar in office beyond the stipulated tenure undermines the autonomy of the Election Commission of India (ECI). He argued that such actions set a dangerous precedent and erode public trust in the electoral process.
Ramesh further alleged that the government's move was motivated by political considerations, aimed at influencing the upcoming elections in several states. He demanded an immediate review of the decision and called for a transparent mechanism for the appointment of the CEC.
The Congress has also questioned the legality of the extension, citing constitutional provisions that emphasize the need for an independent election watchdog. The party plans to raise the issue in Parliament and seek a debate on the matter.
Political analysts have noted that the controversy comes at a time when the ECI is already facing criticism over its handling of recent elections. The opposition parties have consistently accused the commission of bias and lack of transparency.
Meanwhile, the government has defended its decision, stating that it was taken in accordance with the law and after due consideration. However, the Congress remains unconvinced and has vowed to continue its protest against what it calls a blatant violation of constitutional norms.
