Congress Leader Jairam Ramesh Slams Modi Government Over Iran Conflict Silence
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh launched a scathing attack on the Central government on Saturday, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of demonstrating 'moral cowardice and political betrayal' regarding India's response to the escalating US-Israel conflict with Iran, now entering its third week.
Timing of Criticism Coincides with Military Escalation
In a detailed post on social media platform X, Ramesh highlighted two critical timelines: exactly 21 days since the aerial assault on Iran began, and 23 days since Prime Minister Modi returned from his highly publicized visit to Israel. The Congress leader pointedly questioned the government's diplomatic posture during this period of regional instability.
'Has the Modi Government condemned or criticized or deplored the launch of the heavy aerial assault on Iran by the US and Israel that has now led to severe economic dislocations everywhere including India? The answer is No,' Ramesh wrote emphatically in his post.
Four-Point Interrogation of Government's Stance
Ramesh posed four specific questions challenging the government's diplomatic approach:
- Has the Modi Government condemned or criticized the targeted assassinations of top Iranian leaders by the US and Israel that continue unabated?
- Has the Modi Government condemned or criticized the brutal efforts of the US and Israel to force regime change and state collapse that could lead to civil war in Iran?
- Has the Modi Government mounted serious diplomatic efforts to bring the bombing of Iran and Iran's attacks on energy infrastructure in Gulf countries to an immediate halt?
- Has the Prime Minister used his claimed friendships with the US President and Israeli PM to broker a ceasefire?
Answering all four questions with a resounding 'NO', Ramesh concluded: 'These 4 NOs reflect the moral cowardice and political betrayal of India's civilizational values.'
Context of Escalating Military Operations
The criticism comes as the United States has significantly intensified its military campaign against Iran. On Friday, US President Donald Trump indicated that Washington is nearing its objectives and may soon wind down operations, while simultaneously signaling readiness for wider military options.
Meanwhile, the US Central Command reported substantial damage to Iranian military assets under 'Operation Epic Fury', including precision strikes on:
- Drone production facilities
- Naval infrastructure
- Thousands of targets in recent operations
Pentagon officials confirmed the intensification of US military actions in the region, describing systematic degradation of Iranian capabilities. This military escalation coincides with Iran's Nowruz celebrations and defensive responses from UAE and Kuwait to missile barrages.
Diplomatic Implications for India
The Congress leader's remarks underscore growing concerns about India's diplomatic positioning amid the conflict. Ramesh specifically questioned why the government has remained silent despite the conflict's economic repercussions, including disruptions affecting India directly.
The criticism focuses on what Ramesh characterizes as a failure to leverage India's strategic relationships for conflict resolution, particularly given the Prime Minister's recent diplomatic engagements in the region.
