The Congress party launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, mocking his claim of becoming the longest-serving prime minister and calling him a 'millstone around India's neck, presiding over the murder of democracy.'
Congress Leader's Remarks
AICC spokesman Jairam Ramesh drew comparisons between the achievements of Jawaharlal Nehru and PM Modi, stating that Modi has 'a pathological fixation on Nehru' and seeks to erase his legacy. Ramesh alleged that under Modi's leadership, the Election Commission and voter lists are under threat, and scientific temper has been eroded through the 'destruction of educational institutions.'
Sharad Pawar's Statement
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar also weighed in, cautioning that an impression is being created that no leader of Nehru's stature exists today. 'Nehru's contribution to nation building and the freedom struggle cannot be forgotten and must be respected. He cannot be compared with anyone else. Nehru spent several years in jail during the freedom struggle under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi,' Pawar said.
The remarks come amid ongoing political sparring between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and opposition parties over the legacy of India's first prime minister.
