Congress slams PM Modi over Israel support as 'moral cowardice'

The Congress party on Monday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of 'extreme moral cowardice' for positioning himself as Israel's strongest supporter amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The opposition party's remarks came as the death toll in Gaza continued to rise, with thousands of civilians, including women and children, killed in Israeli airstrikes.

Congress' Strong Condemnation

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took to social media to express the party's stance, stating that the Modi government's unconditional support for Israel was a betrayal of India's traditional principles of diplomacy and humanity. 'The Prime Minister's silence on the disproportionate use of force against Palestinians and his unwavering backing of Israel is nothing short of extreme moral cowardice,' Ramesh wrote.

India's Historical Position

India has historically maintained a balanced approach towards the Israel-Palestine conflict, supporting a two-state solution and advocating for the rights of Palestinians. However, under the Modi administration, ties with Israel have deepened significantly, with the two countries collaborating in defense, technology, and agriculture. The Congress party argued that this shift has compromised India's moral authority on the global stage.

Escalation of Violence

The conflict in Gaza has intensified over the past weeks, with Israeli forces launching a massive military operation in response to rocket attacks from Hamas. The United Nations and several international organizations have called for an immediate ceasefire, warning of a humanitarian catastrophe. Congress urged the Indian government to use its influence to de-escalate the situation and protect innocent lives.

Opposition's Demand for Action

Congress demanded that the Modi government take a more neutral stance and actively participate in international efforts to end the violence. 'India cannot be seen as a silent spectator to the massacre of innocent people. Our foreign policy must reflect our values of peace and non-violence,' Ramesh added. The party also sought a statement from the Prime Minister in Parliament regarding India's position on the conflict.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defended the government's approach, stating that India's ties with Israel are based on mutual interests and that the country has always supported peace and stability in the region. BJP spokespersons accused Congress of playing politics with foreign policy and undermining India's strategic partnerships.

Meanwhile, civil society groups and human rights organizations have also criticized the Modi government's silence on the Gaza crisis, calling for a more proactive role from India in promoting a ceasefire. As the conflict continues, the political debate over India's foreign policy direction is likely to intensify.
