In a distinctive demonstration against soaring inflation, Congress workers in Amritsar took to the streets on Thursday riding carts and tongas. The protest, organized by the local Congress committee, aimed to draw attention to the increasing prices of essential commodities that have burdened the common man. Led by former mayor and senior Congress leader Sunil Dutti, the procession started from the Congress office and wound through major markets, including Hall Bazaar and Lawrence Road.
Unique Mode of Protest
The use of traditional modes of transport like carts and tongas was symbolic, representing the hardships faced by the lower and middle classes. Workers carried placards with slogans such as "Inflation Hatao, Janata Bachao" and "Modi Sarkar, Janata Ko Loot Rahe Ho." The protestors chanted anti-government slogans, blaming the ruling party for the economic distress.
Impact on Common People
Addressing the gathering, Sunil Dutti said that inflation has hit a record high, making it difficult for people to afford basic necessities. He criticized the central government for its failure to control prices and accused it of being disconnected from the ground realities. The protestors also highlighted the rise in fuel prices, which has led to increased transportation costs and further price hikes in food items.
Police Presence
The protest remained peaceful, with a heavy police presence to manage traffic and ensure order. The police had made arrangements to divert vehicles on the protest route. No untoward incident was reported.
This protest is part of a series of demonstrations planned by the Congress party across Punjab to highlight the issue of inflation. The party has vowed to continue its agitation until the government takes concrete steps to curb price rises.
