CPM Leader M A Baby Demands Honest Introspection from INDIA Bloc Partners
CPM general secretary M A Baby on Thursday issued a strong call for partners of the INDIA bloc to undertake an honest and critical introspection. Speaking at a 'meet the press' program at the Thrissur Press Club, Baby questioned whether the alliance had adopted an alert, realistic, responsible, and effective approach to achieve its broader objective of defeating the BJP in the recent Parliament elections.
Admitting Strategic Shortcomings and Internal Contests
"If they had taken such an approach, they would have been able to achieve a much better outcome in the last Parliament elections," Baby stated emphatically. The veteran CPM leader conceded that partners of the INDIA bloc may have to contest against each other in some states like Kerala and West Bengal due to the prevailing diverse political situations across the country.
"The prevailing diverse situations in the country would demand such divergences in tactics in different states," he explained. Baby elaborated that if the alliance had been able to limit such mutual contests to less than 100 seats, they could have still fielded common candidates in about 450 seats. "Even then we would have been able to cross the magic number — about 274 seats or so — required to win a majority in Parliament," he asserted.
Analyzing the Election Outcome and Future Strategy
The CPM leader acknowledged that the bloc did make some gains by adopting a limited-scale strategy, which helped avert a situation where the BJP would have won an absolute majority as a single party. However, he insisted that the performance of the INDIA bloc would have been far more impressive if all partners had adopted a much more realistic and coordinated approach from the outset.
Baby stressed the importance of maintaining unity even when INDIA bloc members are contesting against each other in specific states. He urged national leaders of each party to refrain from falling prey to pressures from local leaders and to avoid dwelling on highly localized issues. "The national leaders must think twice whether they should themselves dwell on such issues or leave it to state leaders. They must always keep in mind the need for maintaining unity of INDIA bloc," he cautioned.
Criticizing Defections and Propaganda Tactics
The CPM general secretary pointed out that the absence of a deft and pragmatic approach had contributed to significant setbacks, including the defection of former Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar from the INDIA bloc to the BJP. This highlighted the fragility of the alliance when strategic coherence is lacking.
In a sharp critique, Baby alleged that Congress and BJP leaders are continuously making totally wrong allegations and spreading lies against the LDF and the chief minister. "Allegations of a CPM-BJP alliance belong to this category," he declared. Drawing a historical parallel, Baby remarked, "If Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels were to get a rebirth, he will prostrate before Congress leaders like V D Satheesan or BJP leaders like Narendra Modi who are repeating the same lies, assuming that people will eventually accept them as facts."
Event Details and Concluding Remarks
The press event was attended by CPM district secretary K V Abdul Khader among others, underscoring the local political significance of Baby's statements. His comments reflect ongoing tensions within the opposition INDIA bloc as it grapples with internal coordination challenges and external pressures from the ruling BJP and other political rivals.
Baby's call for introspection serves as a crucial reminder of the need for strategic alignment and unity among opposition forces to effectively challenge the BJP in future electoral battles. The CPM leader's frank assessment highlights both the potential and the pitfalls of the INDIA bloc's collaborative efforts, setting the stage for further political maneuvering in the coming months.
