A day after the INDIA bloc meeting, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Tuesday. This was the first closed-door meeting between the two leaders following Trinamool Congress's (TMC) defeat in the recent assembly elections.
Meeting Amidst Turmoil
The meeting comes at a time when the TMC is grappling with internal dissent and a series of defections. Several party leaders have expressed dissatisfaction with the leadership, leading to a revolt that threatens the party's stability in the state.
Significance of the Meet
Political analysts view this meeting as an attempt to strengthen ties between the two parties within the opposition INDIA bloc. The TMC and Congress have often been at odds in West Bengal, but the need for a united opposition against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party may have prompted this dialogue.
Sources close to the development said that Banerjee and Gandhi discussed the current political scenario and strategies to counter the BJP's influence. The meeting lasted for about an hour and was described as "cordial and constructive" by insiders.
TMC's Internal Challenges
The TMC has been facing a wave of rebellion after its poor performance in the 2026 state polls. Several senior leaders have either resigned or expressed dissent, citing lack of consultation and authoritarian decision-making. Banerjee's meeting with Gandhi is seen as an effort to consolidate the opposition and divert attention from internal issues.
However, critics argue that the meeting may not be enough to quell the unrest within the party. The TMC's central leadership is expected to take disciplinary action against rebel leaders in the coming days.
Opposition Unity
The INDIA bloc, formed to challenge the BJP in the 2024 general elections, has faced several setbacks, including differences among member parties. The meeting between Banerjee and Gandhi is being viewed as a step towards reinvigorating the alliance.
Both leaders are expected to meet again soon to finalize a joint strategy for the upcoming by-elections in various states.
