The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a significant rise in maximum temperatures across Punjab and Haryana over the next five days, with an increase of up to six degrees Celsius expected. This comes after a period of below-normal temperatures due to isolated showers in the region.
Temperature Rise and Rainfall Predictions
According to the IMD bulletin issued on June 14, light to moderate rainfall occurred at isolated places in Punjab and Haryana during the past 24 hours. Both maximum and minimum temperatures remained appreciably below normal during this period. However, the mercury is set to climb in the coming days.
Simultaneously, the weather department has predicted rain at isolated places in these states from June 14 to 18. Additionally, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is expected at a few places on June 19 and 20, for which a yellow alert has been issued.
Temperature Records
In Punjab, the highest maximum temperature recorded in the past 24 hours was 38.1 degrees Celsius in Patiala, while the lowest minimum temperature was 19.5 degrees Celsius at Ballowal Saunkhri in Nawanshahar. In Haryana, the highest maximum temperature was 40.1 degrees Celsius in Rohtak, and the lowest minimum was 19.5 degrees Celsius in Bhiwani.
Monsoon Progress and Pre-Monsoon Rainfall
Pre-monsoon rainfall in June so far has been above the long period average by 26 percent in Haryana and by 17 percent in Punjab. The monsoon is expected to enter northwest India on June 20, touching the eastern edge of Himachal Pradesh and arriving in Punjab between June 25 and June 30.
IMD has also predicted isolated to scattered rainfall over Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Uttarakhand during June 14-20. Isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds reaching up to 60 kmph are likely over these areas during this period.
