Rajya Sabha MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney has called for the declassification of all government documents related to Operation Blue Star, emphasizing that transparency is vital for community reconciliation and to move forward as a united India. Speaking on the 42nd anniversary of the military operation conducted in June 1984 to flush out militants from the Golden Temple, Sahney pointed out that crucial Indian government files remain classified, preventing citizens from accessing the complete truth.
Demand for Truth and Transparency
In a statement released on Saturday, Sahney highlighted that recent declassification of UK intelligence documents has already revealed that the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi sought military advisory assistance from Britain's Special Air Service (SAS). Despite this, he noted, key Indian government files continue to be withheld from the public. The MP stressed that understanding the political calculations, military decisions, and international involvement that led to the assault on Sikhism's holiest shrine is critical for national healing.
Impact on Punjab and Community Healing
Sahney asserted that Operation Blue Star precipitated decades of violence in Punjab, and that recognition and acknowledgment of past wrongs are essential for community reconciliation. He stated, "Declassification is necessary for us to move forward healed and united as a new India." The MP recently left the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) along with six other MPs and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The demand for declassification comes amid growing calls for transparency regarding the events of June 1984, which remain a sensitive chapter in Indian history. Sahney's appeal echoes sentiments from various quarters seeking a fuller account of the operation's planning and execution.
