Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday actively participated in a signature campaign at Delhi University's Faculty of Arts, rallying support for the landmark Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, commonly known as the Women's Reservation Act. During the event, she passionately underscored the critical necessity of amplifying women's involvement in governance structures and policy formulation processes across the nation.
Call for Enhanced Female Representation in Decision-Making
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Gupta posed a reflective question, stating, "I often wonder why we all need this reservation. Every person, every woman, every daughter may not be able to reach this far on their own through normal courses." She elaborated that in contemporary society, women must assume significantly larger roles in administering the country, shaping policies, and driving administrative functions. Gupta firmly asserted that transformative and meaningful societal change can only materialize when women occupy substantial decision-making positions, enabling them to directly tackle issues impacting society, families, and their personal lives.
Highlighting Delhi Government's Women-Centric Initiatives
The Chief Minister spotlighted several key initiatives launched by the Delhi government, specifically the Lakhpati Bitiya and Anmol schemes. She described these programs as tangible outcomes of sensitive, inclusive, and forward-thinking policy-making deliberately aimed at empowering women and fortifying social security networks. The event itself served as a vibrant showcase of women's leadership and the imperative for equal representation, featuring powerful messages such as "It's time for women to lead" and "Empowered women, prosperous nation."

Gupta hailed the Women's Reservation Act as a historic and monumental step for gender equality in Indian politics. She expressed profound gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his pivotal role in ensuring the passage of this legislation, noting that it advances the national cause from "Beti Bachao" (save the daughter) to "Beti Badhao" (empower the daughter). "Through this platform, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the prime minister for the monumental effort he undertook to introduce this legislation," she stated, acknowledging his efforts to build consensus among various political parties, recognizing the revolutionary potential of this law.
The Chief Minister also provided historical context, noting that the demand for enhanced political representation for women spans decades, with roots tracing back to 1931. She emphasized that the law enacted in 2023 culminates a long and persistent struggle, and its effective implementation now stands as a collective societal responsibility. Gupta urged the youth to actively support this initiative and help transform it into a widespread mass movement, affirming that true democratic strength inherently lies in equal participation within decision-making frameworks.
Confidence in Law's Impact and Informal Student Interactions
Expressing strong confidence in the legislation's potential impact, Gupta stated it would fundamentally redefine political representation in India, contributing to the construction of a stronger, more balanced, and progressively democratic nation. Following the formal campaign activities, the Chief Minister engaged in informal interactions with students and women faculty members at a campus tea stall. She attentively listened to their perspectives, personal experiences, and suggestions, remarking that such open and direct dialogue between public representatives and citizens renders policy-making more effective and genuinely people-centric.
Reflecting on the event's success, Gupta noted, "The enthusiasm of female students and women on campus for this signature campaign and women's reservation is a message in itself... The steps moving forward in this direction in Parliament will give new direction and new confidence to the dreams, struggles, and aspirations of crores of mothers, sisters, and daughters of the country." She powerfully concluded that this stride toward ensuring one-third representation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies will infuse new strength and opportunity into the nation's daughters.
