Delhi Chief Minister Unveils Comprehensive Women Safety and Empowerment Framework
In a significant address at the inaugural ceremony of 'Shakti Samvad: A Two-Day Capacity Building and Training Programme', organized by the National Commission for Women (NCW) at Bharat Mandapam, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta outlined a robust set of initiatives aimed at bolstering women's safety and empowerment across Delhi. The event, held on Thursday, served as a platform to highlight the government's commitment to creating a secure and enabling environment for women in the capital.
Three Core Priorities for Collective Action
Chief Minister Gupta emphasized the need for collective efforts around three fundamental priorities to drive meaningful change for women in Delhi. These priorities form the cornerstone of the government's strategy:
- Women's Safety and Dignity: Ensuring a secure public and private sphere where women can live and work without fear.
- Economic Empowerment: Facilitating opportunities for financial independence and self-reliance among women.
- Meaningful Participation in Decision-Making and Leadership: Promoting women's active involvement in governance and leadership roles to influence policies and decisions.
Key Initiatives to Enhance Women's Safety
To address the critical issue of women's safety, the Delhi government has launched several innovative measures. Chief Minister Gupta detailed these initiatives, which are designed to create a safer urban landscape:
- Installation of Advanced CCTV Cameras: The government is working on deploying 10,000 state-of-the-art closed-circuit cameras across the city. These advanced systems are expected to enhance surveillance and deter criminal activities, particularly in areas frequented by women.
- Smart Street Lighting: A project to install one lakh smart, sensor-based LED lights is underway. These energy-efficient lights will improve visibility in public spaces, making streets safer during nighttime hours.
- Fast-Track Special Courts: Approval has been granted for 53 new judicial posts, paving the way for the establishment of fast-track special courts. These courts aim to ensure speedier delivery of justice, especially in cases involving crimes against women, reducing delays and providing timely redressal.
Empowering Women Through Economic and Social Support
Beyond safety measures, Chief Minister Gupta highlighted initiatives focused on women's economic empowerment and social support systems:
- Night Shift Work for Women: Women in Delhi have been permitted to work on night shifts, subject to strict adherence to safety standards. This move opens up additional employment opportunities and promotes gender equality in the workforce.
- Palna Kendra Creches: The government has established 500 'Palna Kendra' creches to provide childcare support for working women. These facilities ensure that women can pursue their careers without compromising on the care and well-being of their children.
