Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta Condemns 'Sheesh Mahal' as Emblem of Corruption

In a scathing critique on Thursday, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta denounced the former official residence of her predecessor Arvind Kejriwal, referred to by BJP leaders as "Sheesh Mahal," labeling it a "dark chapter of corruption." She asserted that the truth behind the allegations can no longer be concealed from the public eye.

Background of the Controversial Bungalow

The BJP has dubbed the 6, Flagstaff Road bungalow in Civil Lines, where Kejriwal resided as Delhi chief minister from 2015 to 2024, as "Sheesh Mahal." This nickname stems from accusations of corruption related to its renovation and the expensive interiors and household goods reportedly kept there. The controversy has ignited a political firestorm, with Gupta leading the charge against what she describes as a betrayal of public trust.

Probe and Accountability Measures

Gupta confirmed in a statement that an investigation into the matter is already underway. She emphasized that a detailed inquiry will be conducted through the Assembly's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to ensure thorough scrutiny. "Every rupee of public money will be accounted for," she declared, adding that strict action will be taken against anyone found responsible for any irregularities.

Her government, she stressed, remains steadfast in its commitment to transparency, accountability, and upholding the trust of Delhi's citizens. This move underscores her administration's focus on rooting out alleged malpractices from previous tenures.

Video Revelation and Public Scrutiny

The attack intensified after PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh posted a video showcasing the interior of "Sheesh Mahal." In the footage, Singh provides a tour, highlighting the costly interiors and various household goods. Gupta seized on this, stating that the truth, "long concealed," is now out in the open for all of Delhi to witness.

"This is not just a building," Chief Minister Gupta remarked, "but a living proof of corruption, arrogance, and a betrayal of public trust—a symbol of moral decline." She urged the people of Delhi to watch the video and draw their own conclusions, emphasizing that citizens have every right to know how their money was utilized by elected officials.

Alleged Financial Irregularities

Raising serious questions over the renovation costs, Gupta pointed out that the work, initially estimated at around Rs 8 crore, reportedly escalated to nearly Rs 62 crore. She described this substantial jump as indicative of "grave financial irregularities," suggesting possible mismanagement or corrupt practices during Kejriwal's tenure.

This allegation adds fuel to the ongoing debate over fiscal responsibility and ethical governance in Delhi's political landscape. As of now, there has been no immediate reaction from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) regarding Gupta's accusations against Kejriwal, leaving the political discourse charged with anticipation for further developments.
