Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Alleges TMC Sabotage During Kolkata Roadshow

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched a sharp attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday, accusing its supporters of deliberately switching off streetlights during her roadshow in Kolkata. She claimed this was an attempt to disrupt the event and create a security risk, highlighting tensions ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections.

Allegations of Disruption and Public Response

Speaking to reporters, Rekha Gupta asserted that the fear once associated with the TMC government has now shifted to its own supporters. "This is a good thing that the fear and terror the public once felt because of the TMC government has now shifted to TMC’s own goons because of the people," she stated. According to her, the lights were turned off to halt the roadshow, but the crowd countered by illuminating the area with mobile flashlights, demonstrating their support.

"Out of fear of our rally and this election campaign, they switched off the lights in the entire locality to stop the roadshow," Gupta explained. "But the public responded—they turned on their mobile lights and gave their blessings and love. I thank them from the bottom of my heart."

Political Context and Campaign Confidence

Rekha Gupta was campaigning for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the lead-up to the West Bengal Assembly elections, scheduled in two phases on April 23 and 29, with results to be declared on May 4. She expressed strong confidence in the BJP's prospects, predicting a victory that would end the TMC's rule.

"Now the people of Bengal are ready to extend their support. This darkness will not last. The darkness that the TMC government wants in people’s lives will end. The sun will rise, and the lotus will bloom," she added, using symbolic language to reference the BJP's lotus symbol and a hopeful future.

Election Background and Historical Results

In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, the TMC secured a dominant victory with 213 seats, while the BJP won 77 seats. Rekha Gupta's comments come as part of the BJP's intensified efforts to challenge the incumbent government, focusing on issues of governance and public safety. Her allegations underscore the heated political atmosphere in the state, with both parties vying for voter support through rallies and public engagements.

The incident has sparked discussions about election conduct and security, with Gupta's claims drawing attention to potential intimidation tactics. As the election dates approach, such events are likely to influence voter perceptions and campaign strategies.
