The Delhi High Court has issued a criminal contempt notice to former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and other Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders for allegedly making derogatory social media posts against Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma.
Court's Decision
A bench of Justices acting on a petition filed by the Delhi High Court Bar Association took suo motu cognizance of the posts, which were deemed to be an attempt to scandalize the judiciary. The court observed that the posts were aimed at undermining the dignity and authority of the court.
Allegations Against AAP Leaders
The posts in question were shared on various social media platforms, targeting Justice Sharma over her verdict in a case related to the Delhi government. The court noted that the language used in the posts was highly inflammatory and could potentially influence the public perception of the judiciary.
The notice has been issued to Kejriwal, along with other prominent AAP leaders including Satyendar Jain, Manish Sisodia, and Sanjay Singh. They have been directed to file their responses within two weeks.
Legal Implications
Criminal contempt under the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971, can lead to imprisonment of up to six months or a fine of up to Rs 2,000, or both. The court emphasized that freedom of speech does not extend to making statements that bring the administration of justice into disrepute.
The matter is scheduled for further hearing in July 2026.
