Delhi witnessed a much-needed respite from the scorching heat as heavy showers lashed the national capital on Tuesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for more rainfall in the coming days, bringing cheer to residents who have been battling high temperatures.
IMD Issues Alert for More Rain
The IMD has predicted further downpour in Delhi and surrounding regions over the next 48 hours. According to the weather department, a cyclonic circulation over northwest India is likely to bring more showers, providing relief from the heatwave conditions that have gripped the city.
Temperature Drops Significantly
The maximum temperature in Delhi dropped to around 34 degrees Celsius, a significant fall from the 40-plus degrees recorded earlier this week. The minimum temperature also saw a dip, settling around 26 degrees Celsius. The humidity levels rose, making the weather pleasant but also sticky.
Several parts of the city, including central Delhi, south Delhi, and east Delhi, received moderate to heavy rainfall. The downpour led to waterlogging in some low-lying areas, causing traffic snarls during the evening rush hour. However, residents welcomed the rain, expressing relief on social media.
Precautions Advised
The IMD has advised people to stay indoors during heavy rain and avoid areas prone to waterlogging. Commuters are urged to check traffic updates before heading out. The weather department also warned of possible lightning strikes and gusty winds accompanying the showers.
Monsoon Likely to Advance
The rainfall is seen as a precursor to the monsoon's arrival in Delhi. The IMD had earlier predicted that the monsoon is likely to hit the capital by the end of June. The current spell of rain is expected to aid in the advancement of the monsoon, which is crucial for agriculture in the region.
Delhi has been reeling under a severe heatwave for the past few weeks, with temperatures crossing 45 degrees Celsius on multiple occasions. The rain has provided a much-needed break, and residents are hoping for more showers to keep the heat at bay.
