Dhanbad Residents Panic Over LPG Shortage Rumors Amid West Asia Tensions
In the coal-rich city of Dhanbad, a wave of anxiety has swept through households as rumors of a potential LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) shortage, fueled by the escalating war in West Asia, have triggered panic buying among residents. This surge in demand comes despite repeated assurances from local gas agencies that there is ample stock available and no immediate threat to supply chains.
Long Queues and Increased Demand
Even before the official opening hours of gas godowns, long queues formed outside several LPG distribution centers across Dhanbad. Residents, fearing a disruption in supply due to the international crisis, rushed to secure cylinders in advance, leading to a noticeable spike in daily deliveries.
Under normal circumstances, Dhanbad district, which has approximately 6.40 lakh LPG consumers served by 31 gas agencies, receives around 16,000 cylinders daily. However, following the spread of rumors, this number has surged significantly to nearly 20,000 cylinders per day, reflecting the heightened concerns among the populace.
Consumer Concerns and Agency Reassurances
Several consumers admitted that the fear of the Israel-Iran conflict impacting global fuel supplies prompted them to book cylinders earlier than their usual schedule. Kumud Prasad, a local resident, shared that many people are attempting to secure LPG in advance due to the uncertain global situation, driven by news of the war entering its 12th day with heavy strikes and no ceasefire in sight.
Adding to the inconvenience, some consumers faced server issues at certain gas agencies, which slowed down the booking and delivery process, further exacerbating anxieties.
Official Data and Distribution Network
Dhanbad's LPG supply network is robust, with 17 agencies operated by Indian Oil, and seven each by Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum. Gas agency operator Anand Dubey reassured the public, stating that LPG supply remains stable in the district. He emphasized that cylinders are being delivered to households as usual once bookings are made and appealed to residents to remain calm and book LPG only according to their actual needs.
Appeals to Avoid Panic Buying
Authorities and distributors have jointly urged the public to ignore baseless rumors and refrain from panic buying. They stress that there is no current disruption in LPG supply in Dhanbad, and the situation is under control. The focus remains on maintaining normalcy and ensuring that all consumers receive their cylinders without unnecessary delays.
