Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar recently took a ride on the Bengaluru Metro and shared pictures of his journey on social media. The move is seen as a push to promote public transportation in the city, which is grappling with severe traffic congestion.
CM's Metro Experience
Shivakumar boarded the metro at the Majestic station and traveled to the Baiyappanahalli station. He was seen interacting with commuters and officials during the ride. The CM also inspected the facilities and cleanliness of the stations.
Promoting Public Transport
The Chief Minister's metro ride is part of a broader initiative to encourage citizens to use public transport. Bengaluru, known for its IT industry, faces daily traffic snarls, and the metro is seen as a key solution. Shivakumar emphasized that the government is committed to expanding the metro network to cover more areas of the city.
Expansion Plans
The Bengaluru Metro currently operates on two lines: the Green Line and the Purple Line. Several extensions are under construction, including the Phase 2 project, which will add more than 70 kilometers to the network. The CM's ride comes ahead of the inauguration of new stretches later this year.
Shivakumar also took to Twitter to share his experience, posting pictures and stating, "Public transport is the backbone of a sustainable city. We are working to make Bengaluru Metro more accessible and convenient for all."
Public Reaction
The CM's initiative received mixed reactions. While many praised him for using public transport, others pointed out that the metro still lacks connectivity to key areas and needs better last-mile connectivity. Shivakumar assured that these issues are being addressed.
The Bengaluru Metro, operated by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), carries over 500,000 passengers daily. With the expansion, this number is expected to increase significantly, reducing the city's traffic woes.
