The DMK youth wing has escalated its offensive against the Congress party for severing ties after the recent elections, labeling the move as a betrayal. This marks the second attack from the DMK, following a similar critique during the party's district secretaries meeting held recently. In response, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) retaliated by condemning the use of terms such as “betrayal” and “backstabbing.”
Resolution Passed at Youth Wing Meeting
The DMK youth wing convened its first meeting after the recent electoral defeat at the DMK headquarters in Chennai, with former Chief Minister M K Stalin and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin in attendance. During the meeting, a resolution was passed accusing the Congress of betraying the DMK. The resolution stated, “Congress won several MLAs and MPs over the years only because of the efforts of the DMK cadre. Even in the recently concluded assembly election, Congress managed to win five assembly seats due to the work carried out by DMK functionaries. Congress, despite being a national party, secured a Rajya Sabha seat before the election with the support of DMK MLAs, but shifted camps overnight without even expressing gratitude.”
Allegations of Opportunism
The resolution further accused Congress leaders of being driven by a “desire for posts” and failing to adhere to even the “basic political civility” expected of a historic movement. It alleged that Congress has a history of “living off the labour of others” and “betraying allies for convenience.” The youth wing also claimed that Congress ministers in the present government were elected because of votes cast by people who wanted the DMK to form the government, and not due to the party’s “independent influence.” Additionally, it alleged that Congress leaders were falsely claiming to have created history despite lacking the strength to secure victory on their own.
Slogans Against Rahul Gandhi
To further escalate tensions, youth wing functionaries raised slogans against Congress and the party’s Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, during the meeting.
TNCC Retaliates
Meanwhile, the TNCC issued a statement on X condemning the DMK’s approach. “Differences of opinion are natural in democratic politics, but expressing them through unnecessary words and accusations is not beneficial to political decency. TNCC completely rejects accusations of treason and backstabbing levelled against us,” the statement read.
Congress Leader's Response
Congress legislative party leader S Rajesh Kumar retaliated, asserting that the DMK is spreading a narrative that all allies won only because of DMK votes, which is not accurate. He urged the DMK to stop this narrative. “Since 1967, both DMK and AIADMK did not win any election without an alliance. So, they should stop spreading lies about alliance partners,” Rajesh Kumar said.
