Election Commission Issues Strict Guidelines on EVM Button Visibility to Safeguard Vote Secrecy
The Election Commission of India has issued a critical directive to presiding officers across all polling booths, with a particular emphasis on those in West Bengal. The commission has mandated that these officers must thoroughly inspect and verify that all candidate buttons on electronic voting machines (EVMs) are clearly visible and not obstructed in any manner.
Specific Prohibitions on Materials That Could Compromise EVM Functionality
According to the commission's instructions, presiding officers are required to ensure that EVM buttons are free from any coverings or substances that could interfere with their operation. This includes explicit prohibitions against tape, glue, or any other material. Additionally, the directive extends to substances such as colour, ink, perfume, or chemicals that might potentially compromise the secrecy of votes cast by electors.
Any instances where candidate buttons are found to have these anomalies will be treated as potential cases of tampering or interference with electronic voting machines. The Election Commission has clarified that such actions constitute a serious electoral offence under Indian law.
Potential Consequences for Tampering and Procedural Protocols
Election Commission officials stated on Tuesday that the body will not hesitate to take stringent measures in response to any detected tampering. This could include initiating criminal proceedings against those responsible or, in severe cases, ordering a complete repoll for the affected booth or constituency.
The commission has established a clear protocol for handling such situations. Whenever a presiding officer notices any signs of tampering or obstruction on an EVM, they are required to immediately inform their sector officer or the returning officer for the area. This rapid reporting mechanism is designed to facilitate swift investigation and remedial action to uphold electoral integrity.
This move by the Election Commission underscores its commitment to maintaining the transparency and fairness of the electoral process in India. By addressing potential vulnerabilities in EVM usage, the commission aims to prevent any malpractices that could undermine voter confidence and the democratic framework.
