Election Commission Seizures Surpass Rs 400 Crore in Poll-Bound States
The Election Commission (EC) announced on Thursday that cumulative seizures of illegal poll inducements across states and union territories undergoing elections have exceeded the Rs 400 crore mark. This significant enforcement action aims to ensure free and fair elections by curbing the distribution of illicit goods and cash intended to influence voters.
Detailed Breakdown of Seizures
According to an EC spokesman, the electronic seizure management system (ESMS), activated on February 26, has recorded seizures worth nearly Rs 409 crore as of March 25, 2026. The breakdown includes:
- Cash: Rs 17.4 crore in illegal currency.
- Liquor: 16.3 lakh litres valued at Rs 37.7 crore.
- Drugs: Narcotics and psychotropic substances worth Rs 167.4 crore.
- Precious Metals: Gold, silver, and other valuables amounting to Rs 23 crore.
- Other Freebies: Various goods and incentives valued at over Rs 163.3 crore.
These figures highlight the extensive efforts by enforcement agencies to monitor and intercept materials that could compromise electoral integrity.
Tamil Nadu Accounts for Largest Share
Sources indicate that Tamil Nadu leads in the value of seizures, with confiscated inducements worth Rs 152 crore. This underscores the state's prominence in the EC's crackdown on electoral malpractices, reflecting heightened vigilance in regions with intense political activity.
EC Reviews Poll Readiness and Enforcement Measures
On March 24, the Election Commission conducted a review of poll readiness with officials and enforcement agencies to streamline operations and address challenges. As part of these efforts, over 5,173 flying squads have been deployed across poll-going areas to conduct raids and inspections.
High Resolution Rate for C-Vigil Complaints
The EC's C-Vigil app, a platform for citizens to report violations, has seen substantial engagement. Between March 15 and March 25, a total of 70,944 complaints were registered, with an impressive 96% resolution rate. This demonstrates the effectiveness of technology in enhancing transparency and responsiveness during the electoral process.
The ongoing seizures and enforcement actions are part of the EC's broader strategy to maintain a level playing field and uphold democratic principles in the upcoming elections.
