Election Commission Orders Suspension of Four Kolkata Police Officials
The Election Commission of India has taken decisive action against law enforcement officials in West Bengal. On Saturday, the poll panel directed the state's chief secretary to immediately suspend four Kolkata Police officers for their alleged failure to maintain proper law and order during a significant political event.
Official Circular Details the Directive
In a formal circular addressed to the West Bengal chief secretary, the Election Commission stated that this direction follows a specific recommendation from state electoral officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal. The commission explicitly agreed with the proposal and mandated that the identified police officers be suspended without delay.
The circular clearly stated: "The commission has agreed to the proposal and directs that the aforementioned police officers be suspended and disciplinary proceedings be initiated against them immediately."
Officers Facing Suspension
The Election Commission has identified four specific officers for suspension:
- Siddhartha Dutta, Deputy Commissioner (DC-II) of South Division
- Priyankar Chakraborty, Officer-in-Charge of Alipore Police Station
- Chandi Charan Banerjee, Additional Officer-in-Charge
- Saurabh Chatterjee, Sergeant
Immediate Compliance Required
The Election Commission has set strict deadlines for implementing these directives. State authorities have been instructed to ensure the suspensions are carried out without any delay. Furthermore, the commission has demanded a compliance report be submitted by 11 am on Monday, demonstrating that the orders have been properly executed.
Additionally, the poll panel has requested an urgent proposal from the West Bengal government to fill the now-vacant positions. This includes the critical roles of Deputy Commissioner for South Division and the Officer-in-Charge position at Alipore Police Station.
Background of the Incident
This disciplinary action stems from events surrounding BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari's nomination filing for the Bhabanipur constituency in the upcoming assembly elections. The incident occurred on Thursday when Trinamool Congress workers waved party flags during the BJP's roadshow preceding Adhikari's nomination submission.
Union Minister Amit Shah had accompanied Adhikari for the nomination filing on April 2 in this south Kolkata constituency. This seat holds particular significance as the leader of the opposition in the outgoing Assembly faces incumbent Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Tense Confrontation Near Kalighat
The situation escalated dramatically as the BJP convoy approached Kalighat, located just a few hundred meters from Chief Minister Banerjee's residence. Trinamool Congress workers and supporters gathered along the roadside, waving distinctive green-and-white party flags while chanting political slogans including 'Joy Bangla' and 'Mamata Banerjee Zindabad'.
The tension peaked when the BJP roadshow and the TMC protest came into direct proximity near Kalighat. For several intense minutes, supporters from both rival political camps stood merely meters apart, exchanging heated slogans and creating a volatile atmosphere.
Police Intervention and Traffic Disruption
Law enforcement personnel formed a substantial human barrier between the opposing groups, attempting to prevent any physical confrontation. Officers actively pushed supporters back to opposite sides of the road to maintain separation.
This political face-off resulted in significant traffic disruption as vehicles came to a complete halt in the area. The heightened tension persisted until the BJP convoy eventually proceeded forward, allowing normal traffic flow to resume.
The Election Commission's swift action demonstrates its commitment to maintaining electoral integrity and ensuring that law enforcement officials properly execute their duties during the sensitive election period in West Bengal.
