Enforcement Directorate Intensifies Kolkata Probes with Fresh Questioning and Summons
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has intensified its investigations in Kolkata, conducting fresh questioning of a prominent Trinamool Congress candidate while issuing summons to two others in separate corruption cases. The central agency's actions come amid ongoing probes into alleged land grabbing and municipal recruitment scams that have rocked West Bengal's political landscape.
Second Round of Questioning for Rashbehari Candidate
On Friday, the Enforcement Directorate questioned Debasish Kumar, the Trinamool Congress candidate for Rashbehari constituency, for nearly five hours at their CGO Complex office. This marked the second time this week that Kumar faced interrogation by the central agency, having previously been questioned on Monday following raids conducted last Saturday against a company linked to land-grabbing allegations.
Kumar arrived at the ED office around 11:30 am and departed at 4:45 pm after extensive questioning. When approached by journalists, the outgoing MLA and current TMC candidate maintained a cautious stance, stating, "I will get to know the reason only after I speak to them." He later added, "The party will comment if there is anything to say," after concluding his interrogation session.
Documentation Requests and Property Clarifications
According to ED sources familiar with the investigation, Kumar was asked to bring specific documents related to the ongoing probe. The agency is particularly interested in seeking clarification about certain properties they have identified during their investigation. Kumar, who serves as a member of the mayor-in-council (parks and gardens) of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), faced questions primarily concerning these property matters.
ED officials suspect that an organized nexus has been constructing buildings on illegally occupied land in Kolkata, allegedly receiving support from certain workers and officials within the municipal corporation. This suspicion forms a crucial part of the agency's broader investigation into systematic land grabbing operations in the city.
Municipal Jobs Scam Summons for TMC Ministers
In a parallel investigation, the Enforcement Directorate has issued fresh summons to two other Trinamool Congress candidates who are also ministers in the Mamata Banerjee government. The agency has asked Sujit Bose, the TMC candidate for Bidhannagar, to appear before them on Monday, while Rathin Ghosh, the candidate for Madhyamgram, has been summoned for Wednesday.
Both Bose and Ghosh have been questioned previously in connection with the municipal jobs-for-cash scam that the ED has been investigating for several years. This scandal involves allegations that positions in various municipal bodies across West Bengal were illegally sold between 2014 and 2018.
Background of the Municipal Recruitment Scandal
The municipal jobs scam investigation gained significant momentum after the recovery of OMR sheets and financial transaction records from the office of Ayan Shil, one of the prime accused in the case. These documents allegedly revealed the names of several Trinamool Congress leaders connected to municipal recruitment processes.
Earlier last year, the Enforcement Directorate conducted searches at the office of Sujit Bose and a restaurant owned by his son. During these operations, the agency seized approximately Rs 45 lakh in unexplained cash along with incriminating documents and digital devices that reportedly contained evidence related to the scam.
In 2023, the ED conducted multiple searches at locations linked to Rathin Ghosh, the former chairman of Madhyamgram municipality. The agency has alleged that nearly 1,500 individuals were illegally recruited by different civic bodies across West Bengal during the four-year period between 2014 and 2018, with positions allegedly being sold in exchange for cash payments.
Broader Implications and Political Context
The simultaneous questioning and summons issued to three prominent Trinamool Congress candidates just weeks before elections highlight the Enforcement Directorate's intensified focus on corruption allegations in West Bengal. The dual investigations into land grabbing and municipal jobs scams represent significant challenges for the ruling party as it prepares for crucial electoral contests.
These developments occur against the backdrop of ongoing tensions between central investigative agencies and the West Bengal government, with the Trinamool Congress frequently alleging political motivations behind such probes. The outcomes of these investigations could have substantial implications for both the individuals involved and the broader political landscape in the state.
As the Enforcement Directorate continues its investigations, all eyes remain on how these cases will develop and what further evidence might emerge regarding the alleged corruption networks operating within Kolkata's municipal systems and real estate sector.
