Sheikh Abdul Rashid, the father of jailed Member of Parliament Engineer Rashid, passed away at the age of 85 in Jammu and Kashmir. He succumbed to age-related ailments at his residence in Langate, north Kashmir's Kupwara district, on Monday morning.
Family Seeks Bail for Last Rites
Engineer Rashid, who is currently lodged in Tihar Jail under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, was denied bail by a Delhi court to attend his father's funeral. The family has appealed for permission to allow him to participate in the last rites.
Political Reactions
Several political leaders expressed condolences. Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted, "Deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Sheikh Abdul Rashid. My heartfelt condolences to Engineer Rashid and his family." The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference also extended sympathies.
Engineer Rashid, an independent MP from Baramulla, has been in custody since August 2019 in connection with a terror funding case. His father's death adds to the family's distress, with relatives urging authorities to grant him temporary release.
