Nashik: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday criticized Akhil Bharatiya Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti founder and social activist Shyam Manav for his remark against former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan Gavai, calling it an "attempt to remain in the limelight."
Background of the Controversy
Shyam Manav had questioned former CJI Bhushan Gavai's recent visit to Bageshwar Dham to meet its head, Dhirendra Shastri. Manav stated that Gavai should refrain from invoking the name of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar in this context.
Fadnavis Responds
Fadnavis questioned Manav's authority to pass such judgments. "Who has given him this right?" he asked. The Chief Minister alleged that Manav makes controversial statements purely for publicity. He emphasized that no individual has the right to dictate how others should invoke the legacy of Dr. Ambedkar.
"Shyam Manav's remarks are nothing but an attempt to remain in the limelight. He has no authority to question the actions of a former Chief Justice of India," Fadnavis said while speaking to reporters in Nashik.
The Chief Minister's strong reaction comes amid growing political and social debates over the role of religious leaders and activists in public life. Fadnavis's comments have drawn attention to the ongoing tensions between rationalist groups and religious figures in Maharashtra.
This incident has sparked a wider discussion on freedom of expression and the boundaries of criticism in public discourse. Many have come out in support of Fadnavis's stance, while others defend Manav's right to question public figures.
