Fadnavis Emphasizes Need for Political Mindset Change to Embrace Women's Reservation
In a significant address on Saturday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted the crucial need for a mindset transformation among certain political circles to wholeheartedly welcome the proposed 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, scheduled to take effect from 2029.
Special Parliament Session and Tribute to Social Reformer
The Chief Minister delivered his remarks during the bicentenary birth anniversary celebrations of renowned social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule in Pune. He referenced the upcoming special session of Parliament, which will convene next week specifically to table the historic women's reservation bill.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered a genuine tribute to Phule by introducing this bill for providing 33% reservation to women in legislative bodies," Fadnavis stated. "While the move is receiving welcome from many quarters, it's not universally embraced. We see men in various other sectors championing gender equality, yet some individuals within politics need to evolve their thinking to accept this progressive step."
Fadnavis expressed confidence that the teachings and philosophy of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule would play a pivotal role in facilitating this necessary mindset shift among those resistant to the reservation initiative.
Educational Initiatives as Tribute to Phule's Legacy
The Chief Minister visited Phule's ancestral village of Khanwadi in Purandar tehsil, Pune district, as part of the anniversary commemorations. During his visit, he inaugurated the first CBSE-pattern Zilla Parishad school to be operated by the Pune Zilla Parishad.
"Establishing a school in Phule's ancestral village represents the most fitting tribute to this great social reformer," Fadnavis emphasized. "He dedicated his entire life to advocating for education and equality, making this educational initiative a meaningful continuation of his work."
Bharat Ratna Recommendation and Broader Recognition
Addressing growing demands to honor both Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, Fadnavis confirmed that the state government has formally submitted a proposal to the central government.
"We have strongly recommended the Bharat Ratna for these transformative social reformers," the Chief Minister revealed. "However, it's important to recognize that some personalities' contributions to our nation transcend any award. Mahatma and Savitribai Phule unquestionably belong to this exceptional category of individuals whose impact cannot be measured by honors alone."
The event also saw Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar and Cabinet Minister Chhagan Bhujbal paying their respects to Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, underscoring the cross-party recognition of his enduring legacy in social reform and education advocacy.
