Farooq Abdullah and J&K Deputy Chief Minister Survive Gun Attack at Wedding Venue in Jammu
In a shocking security breach, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah and Jammu and Kashmir deputy chief minister Surinder Choudhary escaped unharmed on Wednesday evening after a gunman barged into a wedding venue in Jammu's Greater Kailash area and fired a shot before being overpowered by security personnel.
Details of the Attack and Immediate Aftermath
The incident occurred at a high-profile wedding function where several political dignitaries were present. According to eyewitness accounts, the assailant, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, a resident of Jammu, entered the venue with a loaded pistol and attempted to target Farooq Abdullah at point-blank range.
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary confirmed the safety of both leaders but expressed grave concerns over the security lapse. "We are both safe but it is now police’s responsibility to say how it happened," Choudhary told reporters, describing the attack as "a big security lapse." He further emphasized the severity of the breach, noting, "It was a function where a former chief minister, a current deputy CM and the CM’s adviser were present and a person could enter with a gun. You can understand how much security there was."
Political Reactions and Security Concerns
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, son of Farooq Abdullah, stated that his father "had a very close shave." In a post on social media platform X, he wrote, "The details are sketchy at the moment but what is known is that a man with a loaded pistol was able to get within point blank range and discharge a shot. It was only the close protection team that deflected the shot and ensured that the assassination attempt failed."
Omar Abdullah raised critical questions about the security arrangements, highlighting that Farooq Abdullah is a Z+ NSG protected former chief minister. "There are more questions than answers at the moment, including but not limited to how someone was able to get this close to a Z+ NSG protected former CM," he added.
Eyewitness Account and Assailant's Motive
Nasir Aslam Wani, an adviser to Omar Abdullah who witnessed the incident, confirmed that the attacker's intention was clearly to target Farooq Abdullah. "He tried to fire at Farooq sahib from a revolver. I don’t want to draw any conclusions yet. It is by God’s grace that he was saved. He is fine and in good spirits," Wani told reporters.
Police have arrested Kamal Singh Jamwal and are currently questioning him to ascertain the motive behind the attack. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities focusing on how such a significant security breach could occur at an event attended by top political figures.
Broader Implications and Security Review
This incident has sparked widespread concern over the security protocols in place for high-profile individuals in Jammu and Kashmir. The ability of an armed individual to penetrate a venue with stringent security measures raises serious questions about the effectiveness of current protection strategies.
- The attack underscores potential vulnerabilities in event security management.
- It highlights the need for a thorough review of protection details for political leaders.
- The incident may prompt increased security measures at public gatherings in the region.
As the investigation progresses, more details are expected to emerge regarding the assailant's background and possible affiliations. The Jammu and Kashmir administration has assured that all necessary steps will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
