The controversy surrounding Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, over his remarks on women in politics continues to escalate. A written application demanding the registration of an FIR was submitted at the Shastri Nagar police station in Patna.
Complaint Filed by JD(U) Leader
The application was filed by Reena Kumari Chaudhary, the state secretary of Janata Dal (United) and a resident of Teghra in Begusarai district. She described the MP's comments as hurtful, obscene, and defamatory.
In her written application, Reena stated that the statements represent a direct attack on the character, self-respect, and social dignity of all women participating in the political and public sphere. She further argued that by linking the success of self-reliant women to sexual exploitation, the MP has insulted women's dignity and created a hostile and discouraging environment for those aspiring to serve the country.
Police Response
In her plea, she requested the registration of an FIR against Pappu. Police have assured her of immediate action. Saket Kumar, SDPO II of Secretariat, said the application was received on Friday and further investigation is underway. “The FIR has not been registered yet as the police are verifying all the information,” he said.
Widespread Criticism
The remarks have drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, including women BJP legislators who demanded a public apology, calling the comments reflective of a malicious mindset. The Bihar State Women’s Commission also took suo motu cognisance and issued a notice to Pappu, seeking an explanation within three days while warning of potential recommendations for action against his parliamentary membership. The commission also issued a notice on Wednesday directing Pappu to appear before the BSWC and submit his statement along with evidence on April 30.
Conditional Apology
In response to the backlash, the MP later offered a conditional apology, expressing regret if his words had hurt women politicians or “sisters and daughters”, while maintaining his intention was to expose exploitation in politics and protect women’s dignity.
