Fireworks Shops Ordered Closed for 7 Days During Elections

Virudhunagar District Implements Strict Closure of Fireworks Shops for Election Period

In a decisive move to bolster security during the upcoming electoral process, the Virudhunagar district administration has issued a mandatory closure order for all fireworks shops and storage facilities. District Collector and District Election Officer N O Sukhaputra has directed that these establishments must remain shut for a total of seven days surrounding the polling and vote counting dates.

Official Government Order Mandates Closure

The directive is based on a Government Order (GO) dated March 18, 2026, which explicitly requires all cracker shops and godowns licensed under the Explosives Act to cease operations. This measure is part of comprehensive security protocols to prevent any potential disturbances or misuse of explosives during the sensitive election period.

Polling is scheduled for April 23, with the counting of votes set for May 4. To align with these critical dates, the closure has been structured into two distinct phases.

Specific Closure Dates and Enforcement

The first closure period will be enforced from April 21 to April 24, covering the days immediately before, during, and after the polling. Subsequently, all shops and godowns must shut again from May 2 to May 4, encompassing the vote counting process.

Collector Sukhaputra emphasized that any violation of this order will result in stringent legal action. "If any cracker shops and godowns are found to be functioning on these designated days in contravention of the GO, legal proceedings will be initiated against the concerned licence holders," he stated firmly.

Rationale Behind the Security Measure

This proactive step is designed to mitigate risks associated with explosives during high-stakes electoral activities. By temporarily suspending operations, the district aims to:

  • Ensure public safety and maintain law and order.
  • Prevent any possible incidents that could disrupt the electoral process.
  • Uphold the integrity of the election by eliminating potential security threats.

The enforcement of this order underscores the administration's commitment to conducting a smooth and secure election. All stakeholders, including shop owners and the public, are urged to comply fully to avoid penalties and contribute to a peaceful voting environment.
