Five people from Challakere lost their lives in a tragic road accident in Karnataka's Chitradurga district late Wednesday night. The incident occurred when their car rear-ended a stationary lorry on the highway.
Accident Details
According to police officials, the accident took place around 11:30 PM on National Highway 48 near the Chitradurga bypass. The victims, all residents of Challakere town in Chitradurga district, were traveling in a sedan when the front tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle then crashed into the back of a parked lorry that was stationary on the roadside due to a mechanical issue.
Victims and Rescue Operation
The deceased have been identified as Ramesh (35), Suresh (32), Manjunath (28), Gopal (40), and Anil (30). All five were occupants of the car and died on the spot due to severe injuries. Local residents alerted the police, who arrived at the scene along with an ambulance. The bodies were extricated from the mangled wreckage and sent to the Chitradurga district hospital for postmortem.
Investigation Underway
Police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances leading to the accident. Preliminary reports suggest that the lorry driver had parked the vehicle without proper warning signs, such as reflective triangles or hazard lights. The car driver, who was reportedly speeding, could not avoid the collision after the tyre burst. Authorities are also checking if the lorry driver violated any traffic rules.
