Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman strongly defended the Modi government's economic record while criticising Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly undermining India's achievements. Addressing BJP workers in Bengaluru during an event marking 12 years of the Modi government, she said Gandhi repeatedly paints a pessimistic picture of the country despite India's economic resilience amid global challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic and tensions in West Asia.
Sitharaman Dismisses Economic Crisis Warnings
Sitharaman dismissed his warnings of an impending economic crisis, asserting that India continues to be the world's fastest-growing major economy. She said the country's performance is reflected in GDP data and recognised by institutions such as the IMF. The finance minister also accused the opposition of creating a false perception about India's economic health despite ongoing global uncertainties.
Defending India's Economic Resilience
She emphasised that India's economic fundamentals remain strong, with growth rates surpassing other major economies. Sitharaman highlighted that international bodies like the IMF have acknowledged India's robust performance. She urged the opposition to stop spreading negativity and instead support the government's efforts to drive economic progress.
Congress Response Expected
The Congress party is likely to respond to Sitharaman's remarks, as the political debate over India's economic trajectory continues. Rahul Gandhi has previously warned of economic challenges, accusing the government of mismanagement. The exchange underscores the ongoing political friction ahead of upcoming elections.
