West Bengal Police on Monday arrested four individuals in connection with violent clashes between supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) outside Jagatdal Police Station on Sunday night.
Arrests and Ongoing Investigation
The accused have been identified as Koushik Das, Sikander Prasad, Gopal Routh, and Shyamdev Shaw. Police stated that efforts are underway to trace the remaining suspects, who are currently absconding. In a statement, police said, 'Following raids in a dozen locations in association with DCP Barrackpore, four people, namely Koushik Das, Sikander Prasad, Gopal Routh, and Shyamdev Shaw, were arrested. The remaining accused persons have absconded. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend them, including continued raids targeting individuals, including Firoz, Munjal Rajak, and others.'
Sequence of Events
According to police, around 11 pm on Sunday, a retired police officer and a contesting candidate from the Jagatdal Assembly constituency visited the local police station to lodge an FIR. Supporters of the opposing candidate soon learned of his visit, following which a mob of around 200 people gathered outside the station. The crowd allegedly entered the premises unlawfully, triggering a serious law and order situation.
Escalation of Violence
Another candidate later arrived at the spot to rescue him, but the mob turned more aggressive. Both candidates, with the help of their supporters, managed to leave the police station. The mob then allegedly attacked the residence of another candidate using explosives, firearms, and stones. During the violence, CAPF personnel were also targeted, and a CISF constable was injured. Police described the incident as a grave escalation and a direct challenge to law enforcement.
Political Context
The unrest occurred hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to address a public meeting in the region on Monday. West Bengal is in the midst of elections, with the second phase of polling scheduled for April 29. The counting of votes will take place on May 4.
