The Gig and Platform Service Workers Union (GIPSWU) has announced a temporary shutdown of delivery and ride-hailing apps today, from 12 PM to 5 PM, in protest against the recent increase in fuel prices. Union President Seema Singh termed the hike as a 'direct blow' to gig workers, who are already enduring severe heatwave conditions in several parts of the country.
Impact on Gig Workers
The rising prices of petrol, diesel, and LPG are directly affecting the livelihoods of gig workers across India. Many delivery workers and drivers operate on thin margins, and the fuel price hike significantly reduces their earnings. The union is demanding fair per-kilometre rates to compensate for the increased operational costs.
Union's Appeal
GIPSWU has appealed to all gig workers to participate in the temporary shutdown from 12 PM to 5 PM today. The union hopes that this collective action will draw attention to the plight of gig workers and pressure the government and platform companies to address their concerns.
In a post on social media, GIPSWU highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating, 'Rising petrol, diesel & LPG prices are directly affecting gig workers across India. GIPSWU demands fair per-kilometre rates for delivery workers & drivers. Appeal for temporary app shutdown tomorrow from 12 PM to 5 PM.'
The union has also called on the government to reconsider the fuel price hike and implement policies that protect the incomes of gig workers, who are an essential part of the modern economy.
