Gilli Danda vs Billarda: Indians Claim Viral Spanish Game as Their Own Ancient Sport
Gilli Danda vs Billarda: Indians Claim Viral Spanish Game

India is synonymous with cricket, where children as young as five grow up with a bat and ball, dreaming of representing the nation. Yet, there was a time when another sport drew more Indians to the streets: gilli danda. Played with two sticks, it remains a cherished childhood memory for many. However, over the years, modern Western games have overshadowed this traditional pastime, relegating it to the past.

Billarda Goes Viral

Interestingly, all it took to reignite India's gilli danda spirit was some international competition. When videos of the Spanish game Billarda surfaced online, Indians quickly claimed it as their own. In these viral clips, a player positions a small stick on a larger one, bounces it in the air, and strikes it toward a goal post. For Spaniards, it is Billarda; for Indians, it is gilli danda.

One post shared the video with the caption: "The West finally discovers Gilli Danda, a game India has been playing for thousands of years." Many users echoed this sentiment, panicking that the Indian game would soon be rebranded as a Western invention. Others noted how India has gradually abandoned its legacy to embrace Westernization.

"Spaniards have re-branded our Gilli-Danda as Billarda. Wait till US discovers this, they will turn this into an elite global sport & start a world championship. We have so much to share with the world but we consistently fall short creating a global brand," wrote a user on X. Another added: "Thirty years from now, gulli danda will be an international sport, and England will probably say it originated there."

"I was 8 years old when I visited India for the very first time and fell in love with this game, Gilli Danda! Very happy memories. Unfortunately, I don’t actually see anybody playing this game anymore in India," lamented another user.

Spain's Billarda

In northwest Spain's Galicia, Billarda follows moves identical to gilli danda. Its origins trace back to medieval times, mentioned in 13th-century texts. The Galician Federation of Indigenous Sports revived it as an official sport in 2020. Today, the Liga Galega de Billarda features teams, playoffs, and international matches.

India's Gilli Danda

Gilli Danda is an ancient sport with origins dating back 2,500 years. It is believed to have originated in India and is said to have inspired cricket, baseball, and tip-cat. The game appears in early Sanskrit and Tamil literature, with historians linking it to the Maurya and Gupta periods (around 300 BCE–500 BCE).

Similar games exist worldwide. In England, a version called 'tip-cat' was played. Italy has Lippa, while Germany and the Netherlands have Klippe in rural areas. Iran knows it as Mitz Mitz, and in Thailand and Myanmar, it is called Pat-kun-daa.
