Gujarat Emerges as Third-Largest Political Donor in India, BJP Dominates Funding

Ahmedabad: A recent analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has shed light on political donations exceeding Rs 20,000 for the financial year 2024-25, revealing that Gujarat stands as the third-largest donor state in India. According to the report, Gujarat contributed a substantial Rs 309.2 crore, trailing only behind Delhi and Maharashtra in total political funding.

Party-Wise Distribution Highlights BJP's Overwhelming Lead

The breakdown of donations shows a stark dominance by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which received Rs 308.4 crore from Gujarat-based contributors. In contrast, the Congress party garnered Rs 69 lakh, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) secured Rs 10 lakh. Other political entities received negligible amounts, underscoring the BJP's strong financial backing in the state.

Corporate Donors Account for 81% of Total Contributions

The ADR analysis further detailed that corporate donors were the primary source of these funds, accounting for Rs 250.4 crore or 81% of the total donations. Individual contributions made up the remaining Rs 57.5 crore or 19%. This pattern highlights the significant role of business entities in political financing within Gujarat.

Industry Focus: Infrastructure and Cement Sectors Lead

The ADR analysis indicated that a large share of donors belonged to sectors such as infrastructure, building and contract, and mine and cement companies. This trend suggests that these industries are particularly active in political funding, possibly reflecting their economic interests and regulatory environments in Gujarat.

The findings provide a comprehensive view of political donation patterns in Gujarat, emphasizing the state's significant role in national political financing and the predominant influence of corporate entities in shaping political landscapes.
