Gurgaon witnessed strong gusty winds around 6:30 pm on Sunday, keeping temperatures below normal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds in the district over the next few days.
Temperature and Rainfall Data
According to the Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh, the city recorded a minimum temperature of 19.9°C at the Automatic Weather Station (AWS) on Sunday morning, which is approximately 1.6°C lower than the previous day. Light rainfall was also recorded, with 0.5 mm at the Gurgaon AWS and 5 mm at the NorthCap University AWS during the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am.
Maximum temperatures remained subdued as well. The KVK observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 34.9°C, while the NorthCap University AWS recorded 36.4°C. These figures are significantly lower than the intense heat experienced earlier this month.
Yellow Alert and Forecast
The district is among several parts of Haryana placed under a yellow alert on Sunday. According to the latest forecast, light to moderate rainfall is likely at isolated places until June 3, with another spell expected on June 5 and June 6. Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of 40-50 kmph are likely at isolated places from June 1 to June 4.
Meteorological Explanation
Meteorologists attribute the change in weather to a cyclonic circulation over northwest Uttar Pradesh and adjoining areas, along with an upper-air cyclonic circulation over Haryana. These systems have enhanced moisture inflow into the region, triggering repeated spells of rain and thunderstorms.
Statewide Impact
Across Haryana, temperatures remained below normal. The state’s average maximum temperature was 7.4°C below normal, while the average minimum temperature was 5.8°C below normal. Ambala recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state at 18°C, while Sirsa recorded the highest maximum temperature at 37°C.
Future Outlook
The weather department has forecast a gradual rise of 6-8°C in maximum temperatures over the next seven days, indicating that temperatures are likely to increase once the current spell of rain and cloud cover weakens.
Safety Advisory
Officials advised residents to avoid open areas during thunderstorms and stay away from trees, electric poles, and other vulnerable structures during periods of strong winds and lightning activity.
