HAL Hands Over 4 ALH-Mk3 Helicopters to Coast Guard

In a significant boost to India's coastal defense capabilities, state-owned defense giant Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has officially handed over four advanced ALH-Mk3 Maritime Role (MR) helicopters to the Indian Coast Guard. The formal delivery ceremony took place in Bengaluru on Friday, marking a crucial milestone in an ongoing contract and reinforcing the Coast Guard's operational readiness at sea.

The helicopters were transferred to DIG Rajesh Makwana, Coast Guard Commander for the Western Seaboard, by PB Rangarao, Chief Executive Officer of HAL's Helicopter Complex. HAL confirmed that all necessary documentation was simultaneously provided to Coast Guard squadrons based in Kochi and Porbandar, ensuring a seamless integration into active service.

Part of a Larger Contractual Agreement

This delivery is a component of a nine-helicopter contract originally signed in March 2024. Historically, HAL had already supplied 16 ALH-Mk3 (MR) helicopters to the Coast Guard by 2022. Demonstrating continued confidence in the platform, both entities signed an additional contract for six more helicopters in March 2026, highlighting the sustained partnership and operational reliance on this indigenous technology.

Capabilities of the ALH Mk III (MR) Helicopter

The ALH Mk III (MR) is the maritime-specific variant of the indigenously developed HAL Dhruv helicopter. Designed as a twin-engine, multi-role aircraft, it is engineered to perform effectively in demanding maritime environments. According to HAL, this helicopter is equipped to execute a diverse array of missions, which include:

  • Maritime surveillance and reconnaissance
  • Search and rescue operations
  • Casualty evacuation and medical support
  • Coastal security and law enforcement
  • Troop transport and logistics support
  • Anti-piracy and counter-smuggling operations

Enhanced with advanced avionics, a modern glass cockpit, and night operation capabilities, the platform is specifically intended to elevate the Coast Guard's preparedness across a wide spectrum of maritime scenarios.

Strengthening India's Maritime Defense

HAL emphasized that the timely induction of these four helicopters will significantly bolster the Coast Guard's rotary-wing fleet, particularly along critical operational sectors such as the western seaboard. This enhancement is expected to improve response times, extend surveillance coverage, and provide greater flexibility in addressing maritime security challenges.

The delivery not only meets the stipulated timeline but also underscores HAL's commitment to supporting India's defense infrastructure with reliable, homegrown technology. As maritime threats evolve, the integration of these advanced helicopters is a proactive step towards ensuring robust coastal protection and national security.
