Heat Wave Warning for Punjab, Haryana from June 8-11; Rain Relief Expected
Heat Wave Warning for Punjab, Haryana; Rain Relief Expected

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for a heat wave in parts of Punjab and Haryana from June 8 to June 11, 2026. According to the IMD bulletin released on June 7, maximum temperatures are expected to rise by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius over the next four days. However, relief is anticipated as a fresh western disturbance is likely to bring a wet spell from June 11 to June 13.

Heat Wave Conditions

The IMD stated that isolated places in both Punjab and Haryana will experience heat wave conditions during this period. The gradual increase in temperature will be particularly noticeable during the daytime. This comes after a week-long period of intermittent rains across northwest India, which had kept temperatures relatively moderate.

Rainfall Deficit

Despite recent showers, the rainfall for June so far has been below the long period average (LPA). From June 1 to June 7, Punjab received 3.9 mm of rain against the LPA of 4.9 mm, a deficit of 31 percent. Haryana recorded 4 mm compared to the LPA of 5.6 mm, a shortfall of 29 percent. Most districts in both states have experienced below-normal rainfall, with Barnala in Punjab and Sirsa in Haryana remaining completely dry this month.

Wet Spell Ahead

A fresh western disturbance is expected to affect the western Himalayan region from June 11, bringing light to moderate rainfall, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, to isolated places in Punjab and Haryana from June 11 to 13. This system may provide some relief from the heat wave conditions. Additionally, isolated to scattered rainfall is likely over Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Uttarakhand until June 13.

Current Weather Systems

The western disturbance that was prevailing over Jammu and its neighborhood has become less marked. However, an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over north Haryana and its vicinity, which may influence weather patterns. Under its influence, thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 60 kmph are expected in the Himalayan states over the next few days.

In Punjab, the wettest districts this month have been Nawanshahar with 9.5 mm, Amritsar with 8.4 mm, and Mansa with 6.2 mm. In Haryana, Palwal recorded 16.5 mm, Karnal 11.3 mm, and Rewari 11.1 mm. Residents are advised to stay hydrated and take precautions during the heat wave period.
