Scorching Heatwave Grips Andhra Pradesh, Temperatures Soar to 44°C
Heatwave in Andhra: Temperatures Hit 44°C, Life Disrupted

The scorching summer heat has tightened its grip across Andhra Pradesh, leaving residents struggling to cope with soaring temperatures. Since Wednesday, heatwave conditions have intensified sharply, with temperatures touching 44 degrees Celsius in several parts of the state. The unbearable heat has forced people indoors, turning normally busy roads and commercial centres unusually silent.

Curfew-Like Atmosphere in Vijayawada

In Vijayawada, a curfew-like atmosphere has been prevailing from 11 am onwards, as residents avoid stepping out unless absolutely necessary. Major business hubs such as One Town, Besant Road, Governorpet, and MG Road, which usually remain packed with shoppers and vehicles, wore a deserted look due to the severe heatwave. Traders and shop owners reported a drastic drop in customer footfall, resulting in poor business during peak afternoon hours.

The impact of the heat is visible across the city, with roads nearly empty and roadside vendors struggling to continue their daily activities under the blazing sun. Many residents, especially the elderly and children, are staying indoors to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Relief Measures Initiated

To provide relief, voluntary organisations, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, and city police have been distributing drinking water, buttermilk, and ORS packets at key junctions and public places. Several social organisations have also set up temporary hydration centres for commuters and workers. Authorities have advised construction workers and labourers to avoid direct exposure to sunlight during peak hours.

Health Advisory Issued

Health officials urged people to avoid unnecessary travel during the afternoon hours and to stay hydrated. A special ward has been set up at Vijayawada Government Hospital to treat sunstroke patients and handle other heat-related emergencies. Officials warned that the intense heatwave conditions are likely to continue for the next few days, urging citizens to remain cautious.

The heatwave has also disrupted daily life, with many markets and commercial areas seeing reduced activity. Residents are advised to take precautions such as wearing light clothing, using umbrellas, and drinking plenty of fluids. The authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide necessary support to those affected.
