Heavy rainfall in Maharashtra has thrown Western Railway services into disarray, with over 20 long-distance trains stranded due to severe waterlogging. According to Western Railway officials, the worst-hit sections are between Vasai Road-Virar and Saphale-Palghar, where tracks were submerged under water, forcing the cancellation and diversion of numerous services.
Extent of Disruption
The downpour, which began late on July 5, 2026, intensified on July 6, leading to water levels rising rapidly on the tracks. As of 11:00 AM IST, at least 22 long-distance trains were reported stranded, including several express and mail trains. Commuters faced hours of delay as trains were held at various stations or halted midway.
Local train services on the Western line were also severely affected, with trains running at reduced speeds or being cancelled altogether. The Virar-Dahanu road section remains particularly vulnerable, with waterlogging reported at multiple low-lying points.
Impact on Passengers
Passengers stranded on trains reported shortage of food and water. The railway administration has deployed relief teams to assist affected commuters. According to an official statement, “We are working to drain water from the tracks and restore services as soon as possible. Passengers are being provided with drinking water and snacks where possible.”
Many trains were diverted via alternative routes, causing additional delays. The situation has also affected long-distance trains originating from Mumbai’s major stations, with several departures postponed indefinitely.
Weather Forecast and Precautions
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and surrounding districts, predicting extremely heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours. Residents have been advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. The railway authorities have set up a control room to monitor the situation and coordinate rescue efforts.
“We urge passengers to check train status before heading to the station,” a senior Western Railway official said. “Safety is our top priority, and we are taking all necessary measures to minimize inconvenience.”
The disruption comes as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to monsoon-related flooding, which often brings rail traffic to a standstill. With more rain expected, services are likely to remain affected for the rest of the day.
