Heavy rain lashed several parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Tuesday, bringing much-needed relief from the intense heatwave that had gripped the region over the past few days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert, predicting thunderstorms and light to moderate rainfall in the area until June 6.
Rain Brings Respite from Scorching Heat
The sudden downpour, which began in the afternoon, led to a significant drop in temperatures. According to the IMD, the maximum temperature in Delhi on Tuesday was recorded at 38.4 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season's average. The minimum temperature settled at 28 degrees Celsius. The rain brought the mercury down by several degrees, offering relief to residents who had been enduring temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius in the preceding days.
Yellow Alert Issued for Multiple Days
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Delhi and parts of NCR, including Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram, for the next three days. The alert warns of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, with wind speeds reaching up to 40 km/h. The weather department has advised residents to stay indoors during the thunderstorm and avoid venturing out unless necessary.
According to the IMD forecast, light to moderate rainfall is expected in Delhi and its adjoining areas on Wednesday and Thursday as well. The maximum temperature is likely to remain around 37 degrees Celsius during this period. The rain is expected to continue intermittently, keeping the weather pleasant.
Impact on Daily Life
The rain caused waterlogging in several low-lying areas of the capital, leading to traffic snarls on major roads. The Delhi Traffic Police issued advisories, asking commuters to avoid certain routes and drive cautiously. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi deployed teams to clear water from roads and ensure smooth traffic flow. Despite the inconvenience, many residents welcomed the rain as a respite from the oppressive heat.
Farmers in the region also expressed relief, as the rain is beneficial for the standing crops and will help in reducing the demand for irrigation. However, the IMD has cautioned that the thunderstorm could cause damage to crops and property in some areas.
Air Quality Improves
The rain also led to an improvement in the air quality of the national capital. The Air Quality Index (AQI) dropped to the 'satisfactory' category, with a reading of 87, as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data. The washout effect of the rain helped in reducing the concentration of pollutants in the air. The IMD has predicted that the air quality is likely to remain in the 'satisfactory' to 'moderate' category over the next few days.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority has advised residents to stay alert and follow the safety guidelines issued by the IMD. The authorities have also kept rescue teams on standby in case of any emergency situation arising due to the thunderstorm.
