Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren Throws Weight Behind TMC in West Bengal Elections

In a significant political move, Jharkhand Chief Minister and JMM president Hemant Soren campaigned vigorously on Saturday in support of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC), ahead of the two-phase West Bengal assembly elections scheduled for April 23 and 29. The campaigning focused on the southern parts of Bengal that border Jharkhand, an area with a high concentration of tribal community members, according to JMM sources.

Rally in Purulia District Highlights Tribal Issues

Addressing a rally in favor of TMC candidate Sandhya Rani Tudu for the Manbazar assembly seat in Purulia district, Hemant Soren delivered a pointed message. "You all are aware of the oppression and exploitation the Adivasi community faces in BJP-ruled states," he asserted, appealing to voters to strengthen Mamata Banerjee's position. He praised her efforts, stating, "Mamata 'didi' is single-handedly fighting against a communal party like BJP."

Calling the Bengal polls 'decisive', Soren elaborated on the broader implications. "The support extended to TMC by entire Bengal shows that the people are firmly with Mamata didi, who has been working for the people belonging to the Adivasi, Dalit, backward, and minority communities," he said. He also highlighted collaborative efforts, noting, "We (Jharkhand) are working to implement Bengal's education model for the Adivasi and Santhal communities."

Emphasis on Identity and Inclusive Development

At another rally for Somesh Beltharia in the Kashipur assembly constituency under Purulia district, the Jharkhand CM framed the election in larger terms. "The ensuing polls is more than just electing a govt. It is about safeguarding our identity, rights, and future," he declared. Explaining his support, he added, "This is why I am standing in support of 'didi'. TMC, like JMM, has always pursued the politics of public welfare, social justice, and inclusive development."

JMM's Strategic Alliances and Solo Moves

The JMM, which runs an alliance government with Congress and RJD in Jharkhand, has taken a different approach in other states. In Assam, which voted on April 9, the party went solo after failed seat-sharing talks with Congress. In Bengal, it has decisively backed the TMC, marking a strategic shift in its political partnerships. This move underscores the party's focus on regional issues and alignment with like-minded parties on key social justice agendas.

Hemant Soren's campaigning in West Bengal not only aims to bolster TMC's prospects but also reinforces a united front against the BJP, particularly in tribal-dominated regions. His emphasis on tribal rights and inclusive policies resonates with local concerns, potentially influencing voter sentiment in the upcoming phases of the election.
