New Governor-Designate Arrives in Shimla

Simultaneously, the new Governor-designate of Himachal Pradesh, Kavinder Gupta, reached Shimla on Monday evening. Gupta, who previously served as the Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Ladakh, is poised to become the 30th Governor of the hill state. His oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday at Lok Bhawan, where he will be administered the oath by Chief Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia, formalizing his new role.

Background of Kavinder Gupta

Born on December 2, 1959, in Jammu, Kavinder Gupta is a veteran public leader and administrator with over four decades of experience in governance and public service. His family moved to Sangrur in Punjab in 1963, where he began his schooling. He later studied in Ferozepur and completed his graduation in 1979 from Government College in Gurdaspur, laying the foundation for his extensive career.

Gupta's early involvement with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in the early 1970s shaped his political journey. During the Emergency period from 1975 to 1977, he was imprisoned alongside senior RSS leaders in Gurdaspur and Patiala jails due to his activism, demonstrating his commitment to public causes from a young age. Between 1978 and 1979, he served as the secretary of the Punjab unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), further honing his leadership skills.

Political and Administrative Career

In 1988, Gupta was appointed as the district president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in Jammu and Kashmir, and he later served as the organization's state president from 1993 to 1998. His electoral career began at the municipal level when he became the first mayor of the Jammu Municipal Corporation, serving three consecutive terms from 2005 to 2010, showcasing his grassroots connect and administrative prowess.

In 2014, Gupta was elected as a BJP MLA from the Gandhi Nagar constituency and subsequently became the Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly in 2015. He also served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in 2018, adding to his rich portfolio of governance roles. Most recently, he was appointed as the third Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh in July 2025 and, on March 5, was named the Governor of Himachal Pradesh, marking a significant step in his distinguished career.

This transition in Himachal Pradesh's gubernatorial leadership reflects the dynamic nature of Indian politics and administration, with both outgoing and incoming governors bringing extensive experience to their respective roles. The state looks forward to Gupta's tenure as he takes on the responsibilities of guiding Himachal Pradesh forward.
